Charcot-Marie-Tooth Disease (CMT) is an inherited neurological disorder that results in the progressive loss of muscle and touch sensation in different areas of the body. Signs & Symptoms of CMT

CMT is named for the three physicians who first described the disorder. The disease mainly causes damage to the peripheral nerves in the arms and legs, resulting in small, weak muscles. In most cases, the symptoms begin in the legs and feet before affecting the arms and hands. CMT is most often diagnosed in adolescence or early adulthood but can begin later on in life.

CMT is hereditary, so those most at risk have a relative with the disease. CMT is caused by mutations in the genes affecting the peripheral nerves. These gene mutations damage the nerves and the protective coating surrounding the nerves, which weakens the signals between the brain and the extremities.

How is CMT Diagnosed & Treated?

A few different tests may be performed to diagnose CMT and determine the extent of nerve damage. These tests may include electromyography (EMG), nerve conduction studies, nerve biopsies, and genetic testing. Although there is no cure for this disease, there are several treatment options to help patients manage CMT in San Antonio.
